HP announces new cloud platform

Hewlett-Packard CEO Leo Apotheker took a step out of Mark Hurd's shadow Monday, unveiling a new cloud computing platform that puts the company in competition with Amazon and Google. In addition to an infrastructure-as-a-service offering, HP will also deliver a marketplace for consumer, small and medium business, and enterprise applications, Apotheker said.
   
   
Opera releases Web page debugger

Opera Software has embedded into its Web browser a beta set of tools, collectively called Dragonfly, that can help developers find errors in their complex Web pages, the company announced Monday. "Dragonflies eat bugs, and that is exactly what we want [Dragonfly] to do for developers around the world," said David Storey, an Opera developer relationship manager, in a statement.
   
   
Adobe confirms Flash zero-day

Adobe today confirmed that attackers are exploiting an unpatched bug in Flash Player using Microsoft Excel documents. The company will patch Flash next week and will also update Adobe Reader, which includes code that renders Flash content inserted in PDF files.
   
   
Atrix 4G speeds reported slower than 3G

Reports are rolling in that the data upload speeds on the Motorola Atrix 4G are slower than 3G smartphones on the AT&T network. AT&T has confirmed that the data speeds for the Atrix are not what they should be. So what gives? Where's the blazing 4G speed?
   
   
Some iPhone users experience spring-ahead clock glitch

Some iPhone users in the U.S. are complaining their phone's clock did not correctly adjust to the daylight saving time change, where clocks officially were moved one hour ahead early Sunday morning. Users reported several variations of the problem, with some phones failing to jump an hour forward while other jumped forward and then jumped back.

Japan's Internet largely intact after earthquake, tsunami

Japan's Internet infrastructure has remained surprisingly unaffected by last week's devastating earthquake and tsunami, according to an analysis by Internet monitoring firm Renesys. Most websites are operational and the Internet remains available to support critical communication functions, Renesys CTO James Cowie wrote in a blog over the weekend.
   
   
Oracle releases Java mobile development framework

Oracle has released a mobile client and associated framework, nearly two years in the making, to help developers quickly build Java applications for industrial mobile devices. The Oracle Application Development Framework (ADF) Mobile Client provides the basics for developing applications that can be deployed across different mobile platforms without customizing the code for each specific platform, said Duncan Mills, Oracle senior director of Fusion product management.
   
   
IBM launches e-commerce practice

Hoping to grab some of the $70 billion yearly worldwide market of electronic-commerce software and services, IBM has launched an e-commerce practice focused on retail operation integration and analytics. "Through technology, consumers have gotten much more empowered than they have ever been before," for the retail industry, said Craig Hayman, the general manager of IBM Software Industry Solutions, who heads the new practice.
   
   
New attacks leverage unpatched IE flaw, Microsoft warns

An Internet Explorer flaw made public two months ago is now being used in online attacks. The flaw, which has not yet been patched, has been used in "limited, targeted attacks," Microsoft said Friday in an update to its security advisory on the issue.
   
   
Infor makes unsolicited $1.84B bid for ERP vendor Lawson

Lawson Software received an unsolicited buy out offer of $11.25 per share, or around $1.84 billion, from rival ERP (enterprise resource planning) software vendor Infor. Lawson confirmed the offer from Infor and its parent, private equity firm Golden Gate Capital, late Friday. A deal had been rumored all week. The offer price is slightly below the $11.55 per share Lawson's stock closed at on Friday.
